I'm happy I succeeded in my first resolution of the new year. I said for January I wanted to read three new books...
Misery - This was my first Stephen King novel. It's not my genre but I always heard great things about his writing (Jose and Brian are big fans of him). The book was intense, crazy, and very grotesque. The gore isn't my type of novel (I freak out easily). Regardless, the story was extremely well-written and captivating. I was surprised how quickly I went through it. I still don't think I'm going to jump on the King bandwagon but I'm happy this was first novel. I also checked out the movie, Kathy Bates really embodied Annie Wilkes and creeped me the hell out.
Dear John - Fucking Nicholas Sparks. Yes, I cried while I read this. The story was depressing but he laid it out from the beginning so you knew it was going to be. I didn't like the female lead (he seems to write really weak female leads) but the narrator was of course, perfect and heartbreaking. The side story with his father, in fact, was the most touching part of the novel. I really want to see the movie (Channing Tatum will make me ball like a newborn baby).
Mystic River - So, the problem with this was I saw the movie when it came out. In fact, I have the movie and really enjoy it. So reading this, was a bit hard to be patient with. I knew the ending and I knew the motives. This is why I try to read books before the movie, I can't stand having the feeling to rush through because I already know whats going on. The book is good because you get into the mind of the three friends a bit more. Movies lose that when interpreting because unless of a cheesy voiceover, you cant delve into the characters' mind. The writer does get a bit excessive when explaining a few things, a little too much information at times. Otherwise, I did enjoy it and now have a fuller appreciation for the movie.
I have a pile of new books on my desk that I plan to continue with but my focus for February is to get my professional blog running....I need to think this out.
